Bakersfield Police Chief Greg Terry

Greg Terry began his law enforcement career in his hometown of Lafayette, Louisiana.  He was hired by the Lafayette Police Department in 1990 and worked a variety of assignments including Patrol, FTO, and SWAT; and was a detective in the Robbery/Homicide unit when he was hired by the Bakersfield Police Department in 1997.

Chief Terry has worked in a variety of line level and supervisory positions in the Bakersfield Police Department since that time, including Patrol, the Special Enforcement Unit, Investigations, Public Information Office, and Internal Affairs.  Chief Terry promoted to the position of Assistant Chief of Police in 2017 overseeing the Operations, Investigations, and Support Services Divisions.

Chief Terry possesses a Master’s Degree in Law Enforcement and Public Safety Leadership; a Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice Administration; and he is a graduate of the POST Command College Class 63; Sherman Block Supervisory Leadership Institute Class 303; and POST Executive Development Course.

Chief Terry is active in our community including the following organizations:

  • Kern County Work Force Youth Committee – Board Member
  • Kern County Network for Children Governing Board
  • Bakersfield Police Activities League

He is also a member of the Police Executive Research Forum (PERF); California Police Chiefs Association; and California Peace Officers Association.

Chief Terry is married and has three adult children
