NASA Armstrong Flight Research Center Overview

Kevin J. Rohrer is Chief of Strategic Communications at NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center on Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., NASA’s primary center for atmospheric flight research operations. Rohrer is responsible for managing public affairs, media relations, history, public outreach initiatives, and social media efforts to help provide for the widest public dissemination of information related to projects conducted at the center. 

As the lead public affairs officer, Rohrer defines policy for communicating key programmatic accomplishments to the media and the public through a variety of print, video and on-line products. He provides guidance and direction for the center’s exhibit, speaker’s bureau, and public tour programs, and oversees development and placement of content on the center’s website.

Prior to joining NASA, Rohrer served as public affairs director for the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Nuclear Security Administration Nevada Site Office from December 2007 through August 2008. He advised senior management on public affairs activities related to nuclear research and served as spokesperson for local and national media inquiries. Rohrer served as a senior public affairs advisor for one of the nation’s premiere radiological emergency response teams. Prior to this, he served as the team lead and deputy director of public affairs from 2000 through December 2007, assisting the director in many of the same functions.

Rohrer began his federal career in 1994 as the Public Participation Manager under the agency’s Office of Environmental Management, responsible for interpreting and implementing DOE Headquarters public participation policy and serving as Community Advisory Board coordinator.

From 1992 to 1994 Rohrer was a community relations specialist with IT Corporation, providing public participation support for environmental cleanup activities. Rohrer also participated in educational outreach programs, and assisted in the creation of informational material. Prior to this, he was an information specialist at Science Applications International Corporation for the Yucca Mountain Site Characterization Project, responsible for scheduling exhibit showings at various public events.

Rohrer earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing in 1986 and a master’s degree in business and organizational communication in 1989, both from New Mexico State University.
