 Our meeting at Golden Valley High School was called to order by President Kay. She thanked our hosts, the Golden Valley Interact Club, then called on Mike Turnipseed for the invocation. Our meeting “routine” was perfect for allowing the Interactors to see how our meetings are structured. Marcos Garibaldo, the GV Interact president, then led us in the flag salute, but we did not sing a song. President Kay thanked our greeters, Heather and Wyatt Ward and Greg Desme.
Greg Desme also had the duty of introducing visiting Rotarians.   Alex Dominguez almost filled bill as he is the president of our Rotaract Club. Other members with responsibilities this week were Sandy Magley (this scribe) and Marcos Garibaldo introduced his club officers who were present, then introduced the GV Interact Club advisor, Jennifer Yamauchi.
Those with Rotary anniversaries this week were Teresa Waller (3 years) and Mary Breckenridge (5 years). There were no wedding anniversaries but there were two birthdays: Dennis Scott and Mrs. G., who was celebrating the big day in Hawaii. Our Happy Spot time was dedicated to the GV Interactors. Each student who came forward and shared something s/he was happy for received $5. Now THAT made each of them happy!
Alex Dominguez thanked Ed O’Donnell for hooking him up with Interact and explained to the students that the group is looking to expand their group. He mentioned that their meetings are on the first and third Monday of each month at Wiki’s. He explained that even though they are a service offshoot of Rotary, they are also a social group. Alex also explained that the group is a good way to make some potential professional contacts.
President Kay reminded us of Rotary Night at the Condors on February 7. Tickets are $22 and are rink side. She still has tickets available, so let her know. Mike Turnipseed mentioned he would like to have 7 volunteers for the annual Leadership and Ethics Conference on March 14 at Hodel’s. Jennifer Yamauchi mentioned that she has taken some GV Interactors to this Conference in the past and they have felt it was beneficial.
Jennifer then led us all in a joint activity. Each group of Rotary/Interact members were given a box of random materials and were instructed to take 10 minutes to constitute a project that would benefit others. Some of the projects were a water desalination plant, a playground, fund-raising bracelets, fishing derby for under-served families, and a water filtration system. The latter project was determined to be the “winner” and each student received an additional $5. Jennifer closed with informing us that their club determines an Interactor of the Month. The student who attends the most meetings and participates in the most activities receives a $20 Target gift card.
We were reminded of our Club social at Noriega’s at 6:30 on Jan. 31. Contact Bill Black for further information. The STEPS meeting is this Saturday. If you are going and are interested in carpooling, let Kay know. Darrin Blunt mentioned that Girl Scout cookie season is approaching. Denise Haynes requested that members who are available next Wednesday should stay after our breakfast meeting to assist in the distribution of the dictionaries at Fremont Elementary School. President Kay then thanked our Golden Valley hosts for a great meeting time and closed with a pithy quote: Take an opportunity today to serve humanity.
