Bakersfield Breakfast Rotary Club
The Beacon March 11th, 2026

The Scott “twins,” Dennis and Cheryl, greeted members at the door this week and enthusiastically collected funds for the 50/50 drawing, bringing in $100. In a twist of fate (or perhaps suspicious luck), the winner turned out to be this week’s scribe, David Perkins.  (P.S. your Beacon editor is grateful for your hard work this week as scribe! Thank you!)

We were also joined by visiting Rotarian John, a former CSUB professor now living in Singapore, who was introduced by Troy Fringer.

The meeting opened with our always-ready fill-in “Reverend,” Stephanie Baker, followed by the flag salute led by Sally Selby and a spirited rendition of My Country ’Tis of Thee courtesy of songstress Carol Smith.

PROGRAM: KC Fire Chief – Aaron Duncan

Pete Leveroni introduced our speaker, Kern County Fire Chief Aaron Duncan, who gave members a fascinating look at the scope and sophistication of today’s Kern County Fire Department.
Established in 1945, the department has grown into a highly advanced operation covering all 8,141 square miles of Kern County—an area larger than Connecticut, Delaware, and Rhode Island combined.
Some eye-opening statistics:
  • 48 fire stations across 8 battalions
  • More than 630 full-time firefighters, with an additional 100 brought on during wildfire season
  • Over 500,000 calls received annually
  • 90,000+ incidents responded to each year
  • 52,000 of those are EMS-related
The department’s Wildland Division includes 2–4 helicopters, 6 bulldozers, and 4 hand crews, along with a converted Blackhawk “Firehawk” helicopter. Since 2020, the department has replaced 32 fire engines—with five more to go—at a cost of about $1.2 million each.
Modern firefighting has become increasingly technology driven. The department now utilizes:
  • Statewide wildfire detection camera systems
  • A mobile intel command vehicle
  • A fleet of drones, ranging from small units to large predator-sized models
Drone technology even assists during the Fourth of July, helping pinpoint properties responsible for illegal fireworks using AI mapping tools—a point appreciated by local surveyor Ron Nelms.
Chief Duncan also noted that the department is actively recruiting and training qualified applicants from the ground up.
The bottom line: Kern County is in very capable hands.
