Mindy’s Musings

It was a wonderful turnout for our weekly meeting hosted by Golden Valley High School Interact Club. John Guerard presented the invocation while Bill Black stepped in for Duncan Harris for the flag salute. Carol Smith led the large group in singing Rotary’s Four-Way Test.

Interact Co-Presidents Korina Mayorga and Steven Loeza took over the meeting by introducing the club officers and presenting their amazing list of activities:

  • Highway cleanups

  • Pumpkin unloading

  • Tamale event

  • Veteran’s Day Sock Drive (where more than 1,000 pairs of socks were collected)

  • Pancake breakfast

Brenna Ardron presented financial awards to the present winners of the Four-Way test essay contest (one point separated the top two, so both were awarded first):

First Place - Omar Garcia Blanco, Golden Valley, $300

First Place - Aveent Sandhu, Golden Valley, $300

Second Place - Jenisis Harris-Murray, Del Oro, $200

Third Place - Arely Villegas, Golden Valley, $100

Congratulations to all winners, and Good Luck to Omar, whose essay has been forwarded to the District for further consideration.

Advisor Jennifer “Yama” Yamauchi recalled KernYES events! Held March 16 at the Taft Fort. Approximately 75 high schoolers throughout Kern County (including many from Golden Valley) participated in workshops and learned skills in diversity, ethics, public speaking, and team building. Featured speaker Javon Dangerfield also told them to be their authentic selves—a message we should all practice.

Fun ensued when the large group was then led into a raucous few rounds of Rotary/Interact Pictionary. There were some very competitive people in the room!

President Pat took the podium and urged the students to continue participating in Rotary through Rotaract. From the dedication of these involved students, I have no doubt they will.

BBRC will be dark for the next few weeks due to Spring Break. We will resume on April 10, when the inaugural Vocational Speed Dating will commence.

Mindy’s Musings

Sorry, all, but I have been a bit behind in writing up notes for the 2/28 meeting. Well, better late than never at all.

We had a whopping attendance of 46!! The Club welcomed guest Mike Jenkins.

We also welcomed former club member Russell Johnson, who explained—with Steve Kornaki-like precision—why we all had so many ballots and why it matters. He gave us a rundown on multiple Congressional and Assembly districts and the Kern Supervisorial races. I hope you all voted multiple times!

There are no birthdays or club anniversaries to celebrate, but Happy 43rd wedding anniversary to Kay and Brian Pitts.

Anne Galvez and Scott Tangeman were able to retire their red badges. You will be fined if you don’t sign their rosters. You’ve been warned.

So many Happy Spots!!

Marlene Heise was $5 happy to be able to take the newly opened arm of the Centennial Corridor.

Greg Desme was $50 happy after visiting grandkids in Kansas and brought President Pat a Back-to-Back Chiefs shirt.

Stephanie Baker was $60 happy to see her granddaughter's BCHS basketball keep winning!

Denise Haynes was $15 happy in celebrating the simultaneous announcement of grandbaby and grandnephew.

Tom Burke was $25 ecstatic that his tenure as KCCD’s Chancellor 2.0 is coming to an end. Perfect timing since he can now focus on Grandpa duty.

Pin Check!!!! Neil, Duncan, and Jeff Haynes were caught without. And then RINGGG! Jeff was fined another $20 for his cell phone ringing during the meeting.

Marlene was the BIG winner of the day, winning a $78 pot (and promptly started paying people’s fines). That Marlene is a peach!!
