I stepped off the elevator to be greeted by two cheerful Rotarians, Jason Williamson and Frank Wooldridge. President Kay called the meeting to order promptly at 7:00 am. Stephanie Baker provided an inspirational invocation and Jeff Bell led us in the flag salute. Past President Mike Stepanovich, standing in for Past President Neil Walker, led us in song. There were no visitin .jpg) g Rotarians this week, however, Sandra Quigley’s son, Matt, was our guest. We recognized Rotary anniversaries for: Michele Cooper (1 year) March 30; Mr. & Mrs. George (2 years) April 1; Pat Paggi (20 years) March 31; Jeff Haynes (23 years) April 1. Birthday greetings went to Gina Hayden (March 27) and Frank Wooldridge (March 29.) There were no wedding anniversaries to recognize.  Happy Spots were many. Will Duerksen was $16 happy to see his daughter plan soccer for the first time since her surgery. Past President Mike Stepanovich was $15.99 happy to announce his book signing occurring March 31st at Café Med. Becky Brooks was $10 happy to let us, especially Jackie, know that Jimmy Buffet would be opening a Margaritaville retirement community in Florida. Teresa Waller was happy that Gonzaga and the Ducks made it to the Finals and would be $15.99 happy if Past President Mike autographs his book her husband purchased. Susan Searey was $10 happy that she successfully biked from Bakersfield to Wind Wolves Preserve and back. Past President Craig Holland was $5 happy that Susan was not struck by a car while on her cycling journey. Sandra Quigley was $20 happy that Dionysus Brewery celebrates its 1st anniversary March 31st. President Kay reminded us of the many events occurring in April. April 1st is Habitat ground work day; April 22nd San Miguel Grove clean-up occurs 9a-noon; April 29 th is the Dignity Health Pancake Breakfast 7a-noon  . Upcoming events are on our website - BBRC.org. Our District Governor who won a $35 Temblor Brewing Co. gift card while attending BBRC’s Charter Night asked that we raffle it off with donations going to the Rotary Foundation. Pat Thompson had the winning bid of $75. Bill Black announced that the last social during President Kay’s reign will occur 5:30p April 18th at Dionysus Brewery. Bill will send an email requesting rsvps. Incoming president Denise Haynes pointed out the packet of post it notes on each table. She asked each member to jot down programs of interest to them. This will be helpful for incoming Program Chair, Sandra Quigley. Denise indicated she still has two Chair vacancies one being Beacon editor. Please contact Denise if you are interested. Pat Thompson, Awards Chair, indicated he left awards criteria packets on each table. If you chaired an event, please review the packet, fill out the appropriate section and return it to Pat. President Kay indicated there would be a 1000 Flags core team meeting immediately following this meeting. If you’re interested in being a lead person at the event, attend this meeting. Other club members will have the opportunity to sign up for the event weekend starting next week. The program today was presented by Sandra and Matt Quigley, owners (along with others) of Dionysus Brewery. Sandra first spoke about the craft beer history. In the late 1970’s light beers were in. At that time there were only 44 different brewing companies and it was thought that there would only be 5 brewing companies by the end of the century. However, in the 1980’s the microbrewery industry sprung forth. In the 1980’s there were only eight microbreweries. There were 500 by 1994 and 5,000 by 2015. In 2015 Coors closed a plant for the first time in history. Dionysus Brewery is the brainchild of Kyle Pittser, formerly with Lengthwise Brewery. Sandra’s involvement started with her response to a legal question she saw on Facebook. This led to her purchasing an interest in the startup company. Business projections have nearly doubled as the first anniversary of the brewery approaches. Beer Advocate gives Dionysus beer 4.07/5; 75 ratings; Place 4.17/5; Google reviews gives 4.8 stars out of 5. Marketing has been through Instagram an  d Facebook. Kyle Pittser chose to  focus on the production of sour beers since they were not being made in our area. Matt spoke about the beers being produced. He spoke of the acidity of the sour beer ---prepare to pucker the first time you try them. I heard Matt speak of ingredients like peaches, vanilla, cinnamon stick, boysenberries, pomegranate, and guava among others. Matt talked about some of the combinations such as one that tastes like cream soda and is 6% alcohol and the cocoa milk which tastes like coffee and cocoa and is 8 ½% alcohol. Watch out! Many of the beers can be found at Lengthwise, Eureka Burger, Moo Creamery & Imbibe in addition to Dionysus. As a last bit of beer history, Sandra indicated that Louis Pasteur, known for inventing milk pasteurization, invented beer pasteurization twenty two years earlier. He certainly had his priorities correct. Drawing winners today were Michele McClure and Stephanie Baker with each receiving a bottle of Super Funk beer from Dionysus Brewery and glasses. 100 PH points went to Claudia Stepanovich. President Kay ended the meeting with a quote from Plato “He was a wise man who invented beer.” |

duled speaker had to cancel so Scarlett Sabin, bless her, stepped in to fill the void. She spoke with authority about the Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE) program. Her 16-year-old son, Matthew, is currently in South Korea through the program. Scarlett hosted Claudia from Spain from August through January. Scarlett thoroughly enjoyed her hosting experience and recommends the opportunity to everyone. Scarlett “dialed up” Matthew via an app called “WhatsApp” that provides long dista
nce phone conversations for free. Matt said it was 11:30pm there. Matt said he is enjoying the experience. He stays in the dorms at a boarding school M-F and with his host family on the weekends. School is from 8am to midnight daily. They don’t have homework but they study a lot. He’s been on 4 UNESCO sponsored trips: Seoul, the DMZ, a Mountain and an Island. (No way I could spell the names). He’ll travel with past Pres./past DG Jim Bell to our Sister District Conference next week. He loves the spicy foods but has grown weary of rice 3 times a day. He said he won’t eat rice when he comes home. When asked what has been difficult to adjust to he responded that the culture is very different and very cons
ervative. Men still do everything while women are home raising the children. Youth do not have a voice and are not to express their opinions to adults; that is considered disrespectful. He cannot drink, drive, do drugs (all logical for a 16-year-old) or even date while he’s there. He got “in trouble” for having coffee with a young woman. He broke his arm and wasn’t allowed to go on a trip with his friends. He disagreed with that decision and was again, “in trouble”. Overall, Matthew is having an amazing experience. Scarlett explained that while students visiting this country will return home with official school transcripts, Matthew will have nothing. Garces High School, thankfully, has waived his Jr. year except a requirement for english and history which Matthew will complete on line and this summer. Matthew has become proficient in the Korean language. He hopes to be an International Trade Attorney and will apply for schools in Belgium and Paris. When Matthew comes home, he will be a speaker for us.
