The Beacon The official weekly publication of The Rotary Club of Bakersfield Breakfast  What would a Happy New Year’s be without our first edition of The Rotary Club of Bakersfield Breakfast’s Beacon. Yes, it would be incomplete. No worries, as your Beacon writer, yours truly has the bases covered…at least for today’s edition! Wishing our members the happiest New Year’s and a blessing to each of you and your families in 2023 for Peace, Health, Joy, Prosperity, and Love through Service. An invocation by President-elect nominated and “confirmed” David Lari followed by America’s flag salute by David Perkins. The charming and talented Carol Smith felt most eager to start the year with a song, and she chose “God Bless America.” As usual, Carol brings forth the best in mind, body, and Rotary in her selected song of the day. President Karen Bonanno brought forth her husband Tony “the Tiger,” her son Michael and their guests Ryan Ignacio, his wife Mich, and their son Roy. Welcome to all. A special treat was that Ryan, a Rotarian was our featured speaker. More about Ryan soon! Wedding Anniversaries included Past President Mike O’Doherty celebrating 42 years and a club anniversary to President-elect Pat Thompson, an 8-year member. Covering the category of Visiting Rotarian, Ryan Ignacio came to visit our club all the way from the Philippines! Now, how many local clubs can say they had someone from such a distance come to visit and share with them? It is good to be known worldwide; in fact, Rotarians are. That relationship binds us all to the sole purpose of Service Above Self. Service is that central theme that exists in Ryan’s club too! A 7-year member of the San Fernando Pampanga District 2790 of the Philippines, Ryan brings forth the best of what his club offers. With 100 regional clubs, Ryan’s club boasts 50 members that span the ages of 28 to 80. With Polio eradication anchoring a goal for his club, several allied community service projects keep his members hopping! Ryan tells us that many of his club’s service projects are fiscally supported through donations from its members. Not too much unlike our club in the course of revenue generation, I’ll bet they may appreciate a revenue tip suggestion boast from our Wine, Place and Show fundraising committee members! |
