Greeters: Cherryl Biggar and Harry Bryant - were able to make BBRC feel welcome as they passed out tickets for the big draw at the end.  Great job!

 

Secretary: Leslie VoVilla served as Secretary.  She substituted for Claudia Stepanovich.

 

Invocation: Sister Judy stepped in for Darin Blunt with only 5 seconds of preparation and delivered a marvelous invocation that honored Kay and Rotary.  Because of her outstanding job, Kay declared Sister Judy as fine free until the end of June – which came in handy just a bit later when she was noted as missing her pin.  Darin Blunt showed up and announced that he was late.  In spite of his honesty, he was still fined $20.  Even at the end of her term, her fine collection remained quite the going concern.

 

Flag: Gail Braze had a very apt substitute, but the scribe was distracted and missed this important event.  From what the scribe remembers, the salute went off without a wrinkle.  

 

Song: Neil Walker led the song in his typical outstanding style with his renowned humor.  Everyone sang to the top of their lungs, but Marlene Heise’s table won, and even though the entire table got a second ticket to increase the odds of winning the big prize, entire group left empty handed.

 

Visiting Rotarians:  Susan Searey stepped in for Mountain Mary to state that there were none.

Guests: There were a number of guests who were in attendance, however.  They included Zoot Velasco (Twilight Rotary), Tony Miranda (Habitat for Humanity). and High Hope.

 

 

Club Anniversaries: Mike Stepanovich celebrated his 14-year anniversary.  Bobbie Hake and Sandy Magley celebrated 1.5 years at Rotary.

Wedding Anniversaries:  There were several this week.  June weddings must have been in style:  Mike and Shari George celebrated 17 years; Darin and Shannon Blunt celebrated 18 years; Jerry and Robin Starr shared 13 years; Amy and Jeff Bell celebrated 20 years, finally Matt and Leslie VoVilla celebrated 10 years. 

Birthdays:  Obviously birthdays did not correlate with wedding anniversaries.  There were absolutely none, even with a reach forward to the dark day next week. 

Two long-time Rotarians were presented and honored with Paul Harris medals.  Dennis Scott, a BBRC Charter member received his second Paul Harris, and Ken Quarnberg received his third.  I heard someone say that when you have been in Rotary so long, that you can be present in spirit to be in good standing... Not sure where that fits in, but we went with it.

Teresa Ramos-Alverez:  Teresa received her Blue Badge…Welcome to the family of Rotary for sure.  Glad to have you on board Teresa.

Happy Spots:  It seemed that a lot of Rotarians waited for Kay’s last meeting to be happy, as there was a plethora of happy spots which actually could have been the program.  And the fines, the fines were robust.  It seems that the “$5 happy spot” is in name only since no one got away for less than $20.  They are listed below:

Marlene Heise – She was happy for having been on a Rotary International event and even more happy that Halliburton hired her son back.

Cheryl Scott was happy because of son’s successful matriculation in the university system.  This was certainly a Great Scott moment.

Bill Black was happy about going to Ireland with his wife, Frank, Trish, Mike, Claudia, Bob and Diane.  And even though he presented Kay with a golf ball marker, an Irish magnet and some shale, yes the fine stuck.

Darin Blunt was happy because of a promotion.  My sense was that that fine was a bit light, however having already contributed $20 for missing the invocation, it appears that he was quite generous to Rotary.

Pat Paggi:  Pat Who?  Okay that must be old my now.  Pat it was great to see you at the meeting.  He did a great job last week and was recognized and of course fined for the recognition of something else.  Yes it was certainly a high fine-levy meeting.

Cherryl Biggar was happy because she just returned from a Disney Cruise.

Stephanie Baker was very happy because of her involvement in a Diabetes elimination organization.  No fine was levied.

Ed O’Donnell was happy because he was able to attend the meeting.  He had just undergone an extensive surgery a couple of days prior and was happy to be alive.  My sense was that he was focused on that 100% attendance award.

Craig Holland was happy because the SF Giants are losing.  Not everyone shared his happiness.  In July, for example, a lot of us will actually watch the Giants beat the Dodgers.

John Guerard was happy because his last daughter graduated from UC Irvine. 

Brian Pitts decided to stir things up by just saying he was happy and wanted Kay to name the amount.  After some upping of the ante, the figure hit $100.  Brian and Kay must be very happy indeed.

Dan Johnson was happy for something to do with his traveling calendar. 

Missing Pins:  Seems this issue was revisited and not without a big raking in of $25-dollar fines.  Those caught were Greg Desme, Craig Holland, Mike O’Doherty, Sister Judy and Cheryl Scott.  Actually Sr. Judy did not have to pay because she was deemed fine-free and Cheryl’s fine was drastically reduced.  Mike O’Doherty tried, but try as he did, could not piggy back on Cheryl’s discount.  And would you believe - no one including Kay was sympathetic. 

Demotion Party Announcement:  Jackie Maxwell made the announcement that Kay’s demotion would be at Cocoanut Joe’s this Saturday at 6:00 pm and noted the special entrance.  When asked about attire, she just said that clothes were required.

Dodger/Giants game announcement:  Jeff Haynes announced that the Giants/Dodgers game is on; that the bus is now full and that we would be rocking and rolling with adult beverages to the game.  By the way the game day is July 29^th.  As an editorial note and not necessarily the opinion of BBRC or Jeff - Many of us will be happy to watch the Giants slaughter the Dodgers!!  The adjunct scribe does not believe this opinion is shared by Craig Holland based on conjecture.

Golden Empire Habitat check of $5,000: (This was a very large cardboard check indeed as noted by Zoot. In fact Zoot wanted to see our check book that was used to produce such large checks.)  BBRC contributed $500 to this cause.  We were able to be so generous this year due to the enormous amount we brought in with the fund raiser.

Recognition of Chairs: 

Kay Pitts (President):  Kay recognized all of her chairs and requested that they share their Aha moments.  All of those who were in attendance shared.  Notations of those moments follow to the best of the Scribe’s recollection.

Jackie Maxwell (Vice President):  Aha moment was at Charter Night, best club in USA.  Her moment actually occurred much earlier when a girl showed her her bedroom of a Habitat for Humanity house that our club roofed.

Denise Haynes (Rotary Foundation):  Her Aha moment was the interaction of herself with Harry (Pillar of wisdom) and Ron (Robert’s Rules of Order).

Claudia Stepanovich (Secretary)

Martha Samora (Treasurer):  Martha’s Aha moment was that the job wasn’t fun LOL.  Actually with the changes that she was able to make, she said that the job was very rewarding.

Darin Blunt (Club service): Darin’s Aha moment occurred at the Independence High offsite when the students spoke of their experience in Rotary.

Ron Nelms (International Service Director and President Elect Nominee)

Mike and Shari George (Community Service Director Co-Chairs):  Aha moment was the Target shopping.  This is certainly a club favorite.  And even though it did not go as planned, it went better than expected.

Cheryl Scott (Vocational Service Director)

Marilee Reagor (Membership Director):  Aha moment was the 1,000 Flag project.  She mentioned that there was one complaint, but 50 praises.  It was a huge success.

Mike Stepanovich (Fund Raising Co-Director)

Ed O’Donnell (Youth Services Director):  His Aha moment was the RYLA 4-way test speech.

MJ Pasek (Wreaths):  All of the support our club gave to the Wreaths.

Athena Collup won the Pink Stuff and Dennis Scott, recently recognized for his second Paul Harris just won 100 points towards his next.

To sum things up, this meeting was a club assembly meeting.  There were a lot of fines, recognitions and hails and farewells.  It was a fun and very productive year and an act certainly hard to follow.
