BBRC enabling literacy for children

You are cordially invited to prepare and distribute awesome dictionaries to third graders at Fremont Elementary School on February 1, immediately following the BBRC meeting.
You will not believe how their eyes light up when they understand that this is THEIRS with THEIR name in it.
The Happenings at the Meeting
We started our morning with a warm greeting from Cheryl Biggar and Bill Black.  Mary Breckenridge led us in the flag salute. And Darin Blunt provided the invocation.
Before leading us in a rousing rendition of God Bless America, Neil Walker shared with us a riveting story of the origin of the expression “It’s not over until the fat lady sings”.  (Our apologies to Kate Smith.)
Becky Brooks let us know we had no visiting Rotarians for the meeting.  We did however have one guest, Nicki Hilton, the property manager for our building.

Jerry Starr was celebrating his official 14th anniversary with Rotary. Many present remembered that he was one of the founding members of Bakersfield Breakfast Rotary.  And Michael O’Doherty was celebrating a big 36 years of marriage. Congrats MikeJackie Maxwell and Ron Nelms were our birthday babies.
Dave Spalinger was called upon when it came time for Happy Five Spots.  He was all excited about some team that won some game.  I didn’t really get what he said because I was busy being blinded by his bright orange sweatshirt.  All I know is Harry Bryant had to hand over some money.

There were only a few announcements.  We were reminded that we are dark on Wednesday, January 18.   Bill Black reminded us to RSVP if we want a good steak from Noriega’s on January 31. And Neil Walker is still trying to shake people down for raffle items to benefit the Past Presidents Fund.

Our speaker was Catherine Anspach from the Make a Wish Foundation of Central California.  She explained to us that the purpose of their program is to provide strength and confidence to children who have life threatening medical conditions.  They may or may not be terminally ill.  Catherine shared with use some of her favorite wishes that she’s been involved in. Our local Make A Wish chapter granted 39 wishes this last year.  They are some busy, dedicated people.

We closed the meeting with Bobbie Hake winning the Paul Harris points and Sandy Magley winning the 50/50 drawing that doesn’t really exist.
