The Good Stuff

This installment of Bakersfield Breakfast Rotary Club’s Wednesday meeting was nothing short of a story of culture at its best, and with a week of beautiful weather, it was the perfect time to celebrate the Best of Bakersfield. While several members were away traveling during the Spring Vacation week, Breakfast Rotarians that remained behind enjoyed a meeting full of homage to Bakersfield and to the lifestyle that makes our city such a perfect place to live.

Darling Dan Johnson got the show started with a rendition of Mr. Buck Owens, “Streets of Bakersfield”. Yes, not many cities in America can say they have a top country song named after them, and by golly Breakfast sang it like they meant it. Great voices…Great Rotarians!

Dan noted that his band Blonde Faith will be performing as an opening act June 21st in Santa Clarita at The Canyon Amphitheater with nationally renowned blues/rock guitarist Gary Hoey. See Dan for more details!

One thing about us Breakfast Rotarians we are known for our hospitality, and Marvelous Pat Thompson, Craig Holland, Athena Collup, and Denise Haynes showed theirs by hosting guests Andy Esteban, Nick Simmons, Connie Bensusen, and Denise’s husband Scott. Guests turn into new members y’all! INVITE AND UNITE!

New Member Welcome!
To prove my point, because of the dedication of our active Rotarians Craig Holland and Marilee Reagor recruiting, we have two new members. Yep, we have Temo Lopez and Jerald Wyatt. Pat Thompson spoke on behalf of the new members' sponsors acknowledging the special moment it was indoctrinating Temo and Jerald. We are so excited about our new members who both state that they anxiously await Breakfast Rotary engagement.

Jerald is representing law enforcement and is employed at the Kern County District Attorney’s Office as an Investigator; Temo maintains his own computer service company, Bakersfield Bytes.  We are so happy to have them and I could tell by the pride on their faces how much becoming new members of Breakfast Rotary meant to them. What do ya say, Breakfast Rotarians reach out and get to know our new members.

The Program: Teresa Adamo - Author
Our headlining act was in step with the Bakersfield theme, Pete Leveroni, who by the way has been doing a gosh darn good job at staging fantastic speakers this year, introduced Teresa Adamo. Now I have never met Teresa before but I like her ideas. Teresa shared with us how she took an idea she had through the love of the family dog named Indy and published in 2018 a book of the same name, “Indy, Oh Indy”.

With a lot of creativity and inspiration Teresa accomplished something that everyone in the room could relate to. Yes, Teresa’s book is widely read to school-aged children throughout Bakersfield and is a favorite, but her book is a lot more than that. It is about us.

Teresa’s book is about the journey of Indy, as well is a book of our journey living in Bakersfield and experiencing many of the same things Indy may have seen before he found a home with the Adamo family. “Indy, Oh Indy” is about culture, geography, history, family, and love. It is about Bakersfield in a…let’s say a "Where’s Waldo" kind of way. If you’re interested in getting a copy visit Café Smitten, Sweet Surrender (no problem), Bobby’s Hallmark, Village Pet Supply, or Covenant Coffee to get yours.

Community Service - S.E.A.L. Students
It takes a heart of a Breakfast Rotarian to create a culture of change. That’s livin’ man and that’s our Denise Haynes and all those from Breakfast who have steadfastly promoted and provided to the SEAL Center. Through the cooperation of our Breakfast Past-Presidents' Fund, money has been directed towards a field trip for SEAL students and chaperones to travel to the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles. Wow, what a Bakersfield Breakfast Rotarian thing to do. Service Before Self. The children will remember.

Opportunities and Rewards
We were reminded in the meeting and you are further reminded to mark your calendars for the upcoming events (Opportunities).

April 25th : Thousand Flags is approaching so if you know anyone who would like to sponsor please let Queen Jackie know by April 25th.

April 27th :  Club Social at Coseree’s Kitchen on SR 178 for lunch and Bunco. Don’t worry if you haven’t played. Neither have I, so show up anyway 11:00am.

June 20th : Dodger- Giant Game in Los Angeles. As the date approaches, keep Jeff Haynes, or President Ron Nelms informed as this will sell out quick. It is an all-Bakersfield club event. Seating limited to first 150.

Happy Spots will cost ‘ya, but it’s for a good reason. Denise is celebrating her new little pretty grandbaby girl, Teagen, Yeah!!!  And Jackie Alexander’s total tax lawyer daughter was just offered a job with Ernst Young which is one of the top business accounting firms in the world. Whoa! Congrats to the both of you and your families.

Craig Holland put a shout out to the membership that now that we are approaching vacation season that any unused hygiene commodities from your stays across our vast land be preserved. Such commodities such as soaps, shampoos, toothpaste/brushes, and the like can be utilized by many of the children from a number of our Breakfast Rotary outreach. Good idea Craig!

Do you believe in beginner’s luck? I do, yes, new member Jerald Wyatt captured our 50-50! How ‘bout them apples.

Happy Easter everyone! Until next week, stay safe and Bless you and your families.
