Welcome to another issue of the Beacon! Find out who our upcoming speakers are, what we  meeting, and events where you can serve our community and the world.
President Ron's Briefing
This Saturday is the Great American Cleanup and our club has chosen to work at the San Miguel Grove.  So be sure to get with Jackie to get all the details.

And you won’t want to miss Wednesday when we hear from Lori Malkin with JJ’s Legacy and all the good things going on there.  Also, the Four Way Test winners will be with us to read their essays.

Please set aside the morning of Saturday May 4th for food packaging at Jim Burke Ford.  We will teaming with the other clubs much the same way we did last year.  We are still working on the time but should be sometime between 8am to noon.
The Good Stuff
BY:  Cheryl Scott

In the absence of regular correspondent, Frank Wooldridge, I shall do my best to summarize this week’s shenanigans of Bakersfield Breakfast Rotary Club!

Stephanie Baker, (darling of the Greeters’ Station) once again welcomed members, due to the absence of the assigned greeter. Poor Denise Haynes…she may have missed her greeting duty, but she DID fill in for invocation.  Alas, President Ron still saw it appropriate to fine Denise and somehow (lost on this scribe) Jeff Haynes offered to cover half of Denise’s fine.

Two guests joined us for the meeting, including Jerald Wyatt (he’s starting to feel like a “regular”!) and Michelle Ricker, a water engineer with GEI Consultants.  Mindy Wilmot turned in her roster of signatures and received her Blue Badge—she’s official, folks!

Program of the Day:  Kern Community Foundation

Kristen Beall from the Kern Community Foundation (KCF) was our esteemed speaker, providing loads of interesting information about “Kern County’s best kept secret.”  We learned that the KCF is one of about 800 community foundations in the US, and our local Foundation manages 157 different charitable funds with $22 million in assets!  Since its formation in 1999, KCF has awarded $20 million in grants to (mostly) local efforts that improve our community.  When a donor establishes a fund with the KCF, the donation is tax deductible, and the donor can direct the funds to another 501c3 organization.  Kristen also explained the difference between “charity” and “philanthropy.”  Philanthropy is more than donating to a food drive, for example, and it leads to systemic change in a community.

In addition to managing philanthropy, KCF works to strengthen local non-profits and to improve educational access for our community members.  Be sure to watch for more information about Give Big Kern on May 7th, a great time to make contributions to your favorite local non-profit, through the Kern Community Foundation.

Club Announcements & Fun
Many thanks to Kathy Andersen and her crew of helpers that flipped pancakes and served up breakfast at the Mercy Learning Center last weekend.  Michael O’Doherty, Bree Goodmon, and Dr. Joe Nunez seemed to have a great time, based on Facebook videos of the morning!

Lots of fun and service opportunities ahead for BBRC:
  • April 6 – Great American Clean Up – It’s weed pulling and trash pick-up time at the San Miguel Grove, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m.  Kay Pitts will be in charge, since Jackie Maxwell will be “working” at a Rotary District VIP retreat at the coast.
  • May 4 – All-club meal prep day at Jim Burke Ford.  More details to follow.
  • Memorial Day Weekend – Thousand Flags
  • June 20 – District-wide field trip to the Dodgers/Giants game at Dodger Stadium
President Ron issued pacifiers to Teresa Waller (who can’t believe AT&T Park is now Oracle Park—after AT&T spent a gazillion dollars to make the park signage transition not that long ago) and also to Michael O’D (bringing his collection up to a dozen or so pacifiers).
The morning ended on a happy note for Ken Quarnberg, who walked away the big drawing winner for the week.
