Welcome to another issue of the Beacon! Find out who our upcoming speakers are, what we  meeting, and events where you can serve our community and the world.
President Nelms Speaks
Last week we had Diane Hoover from the Bakersfield City Parks and Recreation. The last several years BBRC has joined with Diane and the Parks department for the Thousand Flags event over Memorial weekend as well as assisting in clean up at the San Miguel Grove on Manor. This week we had Lana Fain from CALM.
Being President of BBRC has its benefits. Thanks to Jackie Maxwell who came back with a pair of socks from her trip to Alaska and Kathy Anderson came back with a commemorative golf ball from the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

District Assembly was last Saturday at Santa Barbara Business College which was very informative.  The incoming Presidents from Bakersfield, including our own Cheryl Scott, shared their vision for the Veterans Village.  If you missed it there is another one on March 30th in Oxnard.  This is not only for Board members but also for those who want to know more about Rotary and how it functions.

Did you read the nice article in last Sundays Bakersfield Californian concerning the Girl's STEM program in Buttonwillow written by our President-Elect Cheryl Scott?  I believe that is Martha Samora in the picture mentoring the girls.
Rockin' to Dick Dale Jr.

Wooldridge's Words

I am kinda thinking that the Rotary Club of Bakersfield Breakfast is made up of professionals representing some of Bakersfield’s better businesses, not to mention being dedicated Rotarians, but this Wednesday’s meeting truly was a Wipe Out! Wipe Out in the sense of Surf’s Up, Hullabaloo, and dancing surfer girls! Yes, if you missed Wednesday’s meeting Kay Pitts and Denise Haynes made it known who had the moves when they danced during Dan Johnson’s guitar tribute to the late Dick Dale who was the father of what we know as “Surf Music”.

We were once again visited by what I believe is imminent potential member, Jared Wyatt, who was a guest of Craig Holland’s. I like Craig a lot, but I am more amazed how Craig’s guest showed up and Craig did not. Hey, let’s give Craig credit for introducing us to Jared and we look forward to seeing more of him…Craig too.
Are you kidding Cheryl Scott had a birthday Wednesday. Fantastic! Happy Birthday Cheryl we wish you health, vitality and strength. You’ll need it as you approach your nearing presidency.

Did you know there are three things that every hunter aspires on a hunt. One is of course the “catch”, number two is to eat what they catch, and number three is to tell a good story about their catch. Well all that is not possible unless they have seen Ken Quarnberg and have the correct firearm. Ken sells firearms folks to Americans at Valley Gun and Ken took a moment to share with us his story of how he became involved in the business. Ken also showed President Ron Nelms a sharp knife that he kindly displayed (brandished). We thank you Ken for your Rotary service and for protecting us.

Our featured speaker was Lana Fain of C.A.L.M. Now C.A.L.M. has been a favorite of Breakfast Rotary from its very beginnings and now we have another reason to like C.A.L.M., we were introduced to “Dusty” the burrowing owl. “Dusty” was introduced to us by Lana. Lana taught us all about “Dusty” the owl and all his, or her, friends at C.A.L.M. and I think I learned many things about the reserve than what I had known before Lana’s presentation. Did you know that most of the animals at C.A.L.M. are rescued or injured animals. Sounds like great service by a great team at the reserve. C.A.L.M. is seeking donations for a number of items so if you’re interested in learning how you can help contact them today animal fans!

See you at these upcoming events active Rotarian!
  1. March 28th Breakfast Rotary Social Night at 6pm Tex’s Roadhouse on Wible Road, near the former Sears
  2. April 6th Rotary Great American Clean-up (Breakfast Rotarians will be volunteering at San Miguel)
  3. May 4th All Club Project Jim Burke Ford food packaging
Cheryl Scott reminds us that we need to be on the lookout for Rotary Foundation Pledge invoices which will be sent to you soon. Ah what the heck, I had my checkbook I just wrote the check on the spot. Remember, Foundation Pledges help others and then help our club too! Let’s be a district leader and be a 100% pledging club.

I was beginning to think that my strategy to win the opportunity drawing was going to play out this week to secure the prize of $65. Well I hope I do better with my picks I made for the brackets in the NCAA Basketball Tournament. I lost again, WINNER AGAIN Cheryl Scott, what’s up with that!
